I’m almost afraid to say it out loud, but I think we are starting to transition from winter to spring here in Lithuania. In the past week, much of the snow has melted from the sidewalks. It’s still below freezing, but not quite as cold — and we only get snow showers now rather than full on snow. Next week the forecast predicts high temperatures in the 40s F (6-8C) and rain. I can hardly believe it!
Perhaps I should not be so surprised that winter is on its way out. After all, today is Užgavenės, also known as Shrove Tuesday or Mardi Gras. In addition to eating pancakes on the Tuesday before Lent begins, Lithuanians burn the winter witch. This evening, I’ll be at at the Kaunas Castle join in the festivities. Hopefully I’ll be able to get some good photos to show you tomorrow.
