Doughnuts are one of my favorite treats. What’s not to love about deep-fried sweet dough? Fortunately, Lithuania has its own version of doughnuts, spurgos. The Lithuanian doughnut is round, plump and covered with sugar. They might be plain or jam-filled or even filled with varškė. It tends to be more doughy than American doughnuts.
The Spurgienė (doughnut shop) on Laisvės Alėja often has a line out the door for some of the best doughnuts in town. My favorites are the jam-filled ones. A warm doughnut and a cup of tea is the perfect treat on a cold, winter’s day.
